As a teacher, I really have had a tough time over the last 19 years with the cancellation issue. It’s not a fun one! I am fully aware of the statistics that prove allowing clients to late cancel without a fee is damaging to the business. However, I often allow students to slide past my rule of 24-hour notification for a cancelled session. Since we love what we do and adore our clients, it is easy to be persuaded and ignore the policy.

For clients and students out there, now you know a bit of the stickiness of this issue…it is not easy for studio owners and fitness/wellness teachers to put their foot down! But we must, and we hope you understand.

You see, it’s just us. It is, for the majority of instructors, a one man/woman show. That means no paid vacation, no days off, no insurance, no 401K. Being on your own in the health industry usually requires a teacher to be ready to foot the bill for his or her basics. When we encounter a cancellation, that simply means that hour or that session is not paid and we are unable to fill the vacant slot on the fly…a financial loss. So, most of us require 24 hours notice, unless there is an emergency. Many of us, and I’ve already confessed my business sin, give certain students a bigger leeway, and hurt themselves, financially down the line.

So the next time you feel uncertain about your day, your child’s cough, your dental appointment length, communicate with your teacher ahead of time. If she or he is willing to be flexible, great! But allow them to make that call. We would greatly appreciate not having to charge you for a late cancel. We are teachers…and we love what we do!
